MANILA, Philippines - A Chinese naval fleet will arrive in Manila next month at the invitation of the Philippine government, the Chinese embassy said yesterday.
“As invited by the Philippine government, task group 150 of the People’s Liberation Army Navy of China will arrive in Manila this May,” said Edrich Lim of the political section of the embassy.
Relations between China and Philippines have improved under the Duterte administration.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said China-Philippines relations have been turned around.
Questions were raised on the Philippines’ willingness to enforce the United Nations arbitral tribunal ruling as Manila seemed to be on a track to relinquish the gains that have been made.
In a landmark ruling on July 12, the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) found no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to a “nine-dash line” in the South China Sea and Beijing had breached the sovereign rights of the Philippines, which brought the case.
The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) called for the implementation of The Hague ruling on the South China Sea as they reiterated their strong opposition to threat or use of force and building of outposts and their use for military purposes.
The ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States opposed the militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea.
The ministers reiterated their strong opposition to any unilateral action which could increase tensions, such as the threat or use of force, large scale land reclamation, building of outposts, as well as their use for military purposes and urged all parties to pursue demilitarization of disputed features and to comply with their obligations under international law.
